The more you 3D print, the more waste you create. Sadly, waste is almost impossible to completely avoid with 3D printing. So what can you actually do about it? That is exactly what we will be talking about in this post - the best and worst ways to recycle your 3D printing waste.
1. Recycling Services
This is one you might already be using for things like water bottles. In countries like the USA, Germany, and Canada, there are recycling services, but not all of them specifically accept 3D printing filament. In the USA, 3D printing waste can fall under categories like "other plastics," but that does not mean every recycling center can actually recycle it.
You might think you can just throw PLA into your curbside recycling bin because it is plastic, but it is not that simple. Some recycling programs may accept it under categories like "other plastics," but that does not mean the recycling facility can actually recycle it. If they cannot identify or properly process the material, they may just throw it away. Better safe than sorry.
What I would do is look for the closest recycling center near you and call them. Ask if they accept PLA or other 3D printing plastics. You can also check their website because it might say if they accept them. Going to the recycling center yourself takes a bit more effort, but if they actually accept 3D printing waste, mother nature will thank you.
Don't forget to sort your 3D printing waste by color and material. You should keep materials like PLA and PETG separate because they have different properties and recycling processes - our PLA vs PETG guide breaks down the difference if you're not sure which is which. Sorting everything before you bring it in makes the job easier for the people at the recycling center. If they cannot recycle it because different materials are mixed together, then they may just throw it away and you have not really accomplished anything.
2. Recycling Organizations
There are also organizations and companies that specifically recycle 3D printing waste. One of the main ones in the USA is Printerior. They accept PLA, PLA+, and PETG, but you still have to sort your waste by material before sending it in. Printerior also says that sorting by color is helpful but not required.
The problem is that Printerior is based in Missouri. You can drop off your waste if you are near St. Louis, but for everyone else, you have to ship it to them. That means paying for shipping and going through the effort of packaging your waste.
So if you live near St. Louis, this can be a great option. But for the rest of us, it is not exactly convenient. And what about people in other countries? You obviously cannot ship your plastic halfway around the world just to recycle a few failed prints.
That is why I would not recommend this as your main recycling method unless you happen to live close to one of these organizations. There are other recycling services in different countries though - All3DP has put together a list of them worth checking out.
3. Make Your Own Filament
Okay, what about getting your own shredder and extruder and making your own filament? Not a bad idea if it did not cost around $1,500. That is a lot of money, and the filament probably will not turn out the best.
Making consistent filament is actually pretty difficult. You have to shred the plastic, melt it, extrude it, keep the diameter consistent, and deal with things like moisture and contamination.
But you can make the idea better by using pellets and mixing recycled PLA with virgin PLA. When you recycle plastic, it gets heated again, and that can cause the material to degrade. Mixing recycled material with new material can help make the resulting filament more consistent - it's the same trade-off we cover in our deeper look at whether recycling PLA is worth it.
If you're thinking, "Wait, someone actually tried this?" - yes. There are creators who have documented the entire process of building and using a home recycling system on YouTube, including all the problems that come with making your own filament. Worth searching out if you're considering going down this road yourself.
4. Get a Premade Recycling System
Okay, what about getting a premade system that does all of this for you? There are currently two companies that have made, or are making, systems like this. The problem is that neither one is fully released yet.
First, we have the more controversial one, the LOOP system. Some people have called it a scam because it is not on Kickstarter, and you have to pay $100 now to get a discount on the system later. That does make it a gamble. But if it is real and works as shown, it could be an amazing system.
The process is pretty simple. First, it takes your waste and puts it through a shredder, breaking it down into very small pieces. Once everything has been shredded, it moves into the extruder. The plastic is heated up and pushed through a nozzle to make new filament. After some user effort, the system can then automatically wind the filament onto a spool.
Sounds great, right? The problem is that when LOOP first came out, they did not have much to show for it besides a 3D model. That made a lot of people skeptical. Then they released a video showing the system working, and that changed some people's minds. But it has been a while since then, and we have not heard much from them since. No matter what, buying something like this before it is fully released is always a gamble. If you are willing to take that gamble, it could pay off.
The price is also interesting. You pay $100 to get access to a future price of around $1,500, while the planned MSRP is around $2,500. So you either take the gamble now for the lower price or wait and potentially pay a lot more later.
Then there is the second company, which I think is a bit more promising: Creality. Creality is already a well-known company in the 3D printing space, and they have been working on their own filament recycling system.
The basic process is very similar. You use the M1 shredder to break your failed prints and other waste into small pieces. You can buy the shredder separately, and then the system heats the plastic and extrudes it into new filament. There is still some user effort involved, but once the filament is made, it can be wound onto a spool.
Again, the filament probably will not be as good as brand-new filament. But that is kind of the point of recycling. You are taking waste that would have been thrown away and turning it back into something you can use.
The interesting part is the pricing. If you back the full system, the price is $1,299, with an MSRP of $1,699. If you only want the extruder, it is $849 with an MSRP of $1,149. The shredder costs $499, with an MSRP of $649. For brand-new technology like this, those prices are not terrible. They are still a lot of money, but compared to building your own system from scratch, it is much easier.
Creality is also using Indiegogo instead of Kickstarter for this project. Either way, backing a product before it is fully released still comes with some risk. Creality confirmed that the M1 Filament Maker and R1 Shredder launched on Indiegogo in March 2026.
Conclusion
So, what is the best way to recycle your 3D printing waste? Honestly, there is no one answer. It depends on how much you print, where you live, how much money you want to spend, and how much effort you are willing to put in.
For most people, I think the best option is to find a local recycling center or organization that actually accepts 3D printing waste. If you can reuse your failed prints instead, even better. You do not need to spend thousands of dollars just to recycle a few kilograms of plastic.
If you print a huge amount of plastic, then getting your own shredder and extruder could start making more sense. Premade systems like LOOP and Creality could also make things much easier in the future, but since these systems are still new, there is always some risk when buying one.
At the end of the day, the most important thing is to actually do something with your waste. Whether you recycle it, reuse it, or turn it into something new, keeping it out of the trash is already a step in the right direction.
